Hervey Bay

A three hour bus ride this morning dropped us off at Hervey Bay, one of the fastest growing communities in Australia. It is a sprawling town that reminds me of every suburb I've ever seen, except that it happens to border a calm, sheltered body of sea water.

Early tomorrow morning our group will pile into a couple of 4X4 Toyota Landcruisers and be ferried across the bay to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. We'll spend three days (probably without any Internet) roaming the island and partying in permanent tent cities at night, with groups of other campers doing the same thing.

The weather has lightened up and the rain has stopped, and though it will remain cloudy for the next 48 hours it will still be warm enough to ditch shoes and shirts. God this place is great!
